The parliamentary committee for health has established that although pork is the most widely consumed meat in the country, only Masaka and Kampala cities have only one gazetted abattoir each for slaughtering pigs.
Committee chairperson Joseph Ruyonga (Hoima West Division) told parliament on Wednesday that out of nine cities and four districts inspected, it was established that Masaka has one abattoir for cows and one for pigs, while Kampala has four for cows and one for pigs.
After the chairman’s report to the house, MP Christine Nakimwero (Kiboga Woman) was concerned over the health of pork consumers given that it is one of the most widely eaten meat in the country.
“There is an urgent need for research to establish where all the pork eaten in the country is processed if there are only two gazetted abattoirs in the country; we need to establish the degree of hygiene in places where so much pork is processed,” she noted.
All this follows a decision to sanction the committee to establish the degree of hygiene in abattoirs in the country.
Nakimwero suggested that there is an urgent need to establish how many pig abattoirs there are in the country as a beginning point to see how safe they are for the consumers of the country’s one of the biggest delicacies.
Short of this, the legislators concurred, the health of many Ugandans is at stake as the likelihood of an outbreak of a health hazard related to lack of hygiene in food processing places, is imminent.
