Gov’t Embarks on ‘Mailo land’ Streamlining in Mukono

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has begun a countrywide campaign to streamline land tenure system and decisively iron out the monotonous related wrangles.

The development comes in the wake of perennial land ownership disagreements in regions with anomalies in documentation which has in many cases culminated into undue disputes.

According to the ministry spokesperson, Dennis Obbo, the beginning which is taking off in Mukono Municipality, is geared at correcting challenges characterized by double titling, and many times with scanty information pertaining to its ownership. ‘It is land with such anomalies that we are going to handle’, Obbo said.

According to the spokesperson, this change has been deemed essential as a precedent to migration from the old management system to the new land management system, under which one can establish the situation on his or her land using modern technology methods without physically going to the lands ministry or offices.

However, Ugandans can best benefit from this system after streamlining ownership of their land to the dot, and this is the reason why the ministry has decided to computerize the system countrywide in a free-for-all manner, with relevant information accessible online by anyone, anytime.

The first challenge to be tackled in incomplete documentation, for instance, cases where information at the land office indicates only the owner with no information indicating plot and block numbers.

Owners with titles falling in this category are advised to forthwith visit Mukono land office with full information about their land for adequate rectification of any short falls.

In cases of double titling on your land, the law gives you 21 days on reading this, to arrange your documents and seek due clearance in order to iron out the encroachment problem on your land.

The exercise is going to be conducted in an open manner and those found with questionable documents will have their titles cancelled forthwith.

Obbo says you have to carry with you all documents pertaining to your land, like a title or sale agreement to ascertain/support your ownership.

You need to carry an original copy of the national identification card to prove beyond doubt that you are a bona fide land owner. He advised all concerned parties to observe time management so as to expedite the process.
