As Uganda joins the rest of the World to commemorate the International Human Rights Day, celebrated on 10th December, Kasangati town council leaders have held a rights sensitization retreat at Kasangati town council in Wakiso district.

In his facilitation, Wakiso Human Rights Commission chairperson, Elly Kasirye has condemned leaders who neglect observance of human rights of the people they lead, and instead take part in trampling on these rights.

Kasirye said it is shameless for those in power to simply look on as some people’s rights are abused by those in leadership, and predicted that if this situation is not adequately addressed now, the victims of abuse will continue to cry unassisted for ages.

He observed that there are welfare systems in place which could be used to fight this vice, rather than concerned people folding their hands and doing nothing.

In his contribution, Wakiso District Health Officer, Dr. Ndugga Frank called on lawyers to come to the citizens’ rescue by doing all in their power to reverse the situation of stalling cases which he said will only serve as a disincentive for people to seek court redress.

Dr. Nduga pointed out that when justice seems not to be flowing the way it is supposed to go; the subsequent injustice will directly be backed by the adage that justice delayed is justice denied.

The town council representative, councilor Nanteza Juliet pointed out that they were tickled to convene human rights commissioners and legal practitioners following rampant abuse of human rights in their area.

Nanteza observed that absence of justice resulting from rights abuses breeds lack of trust and the final result is uncoordinated execution of duties and subsequent destruction of the development machinery.
