West Buganda Diocese has submitted two names to the House of Bishops, from which to choose the next bishop for the diocese who will replace Bp. Henry Katumba Tamale who is retiring soon.

Those shortlisted include Archdeacon of Kakoma Archdeaconry in Rakai, Rev. Can Gaster Nsereko and the Archdeacon of Sembabule Archdeaconry, Rev. Can. Patrick Ssimbwa.

The two names were zeroed on during a meeting at Munyonyo presided over by the diocesan legal advisor Stanley Kawalya.

By law, the sitting bishop, Henry Katumba is under obligation to hand over office by March 28, 2025 when he clocks the mandatory retirement age of 65.

It is therefore expected that the House of Bishops will sit soon to name Katumba’s successor to whom he will hand over the instruments of service.

The next stage is sending the shortlisted names to the Archbishop, Dr. Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu who will then set a date for the House of Bishops to select who of the two is to become the next bishop of West Buganda diocese.

Bishop Katumba has served for nine years, having assumed office on 28th August 2016. West Buganda diocese came into existence in 1960 simultaneously with the dioceses of Namirembe, Busoga, Ankole, Bunyoro-Kitara and Northern Uganda.

The pioneer bishop of the diocese was Festo Lutaaya while Bishop Tamale succeeded Bishop Godfrey Makumbi who died before retirement.
