Nansana police in Wakiso district is holding two officials of Wakiso Boda Boda Riders and Owners SACCO for diverting to personal use members’ savings amounting to sh100m which was due for sharing ahead of Christmas.
The SACCO chairman, Umar Kiggundu and the defence secretary Hassan Mukumbi are said to have diverted savings of the over 200 SACCO members, leading to their arrest and incarceration by police which acted on complaints by the residents of Nansana-Gganda village.
On assembling at the venue where the members were due to receive their portions of the savings on Thursday, the two informed them that the money was not readily available. According to the angry villagers, the chairman Kiggundu said they could receive the money in March next year after books of accounts had been put straight.
This threw the members into a frenzy and they reported matters to police leading to the two officials’ arrest. Before security authorities, the two then changed their statement and admitted that they had used the money to rent a piece of land and planted maize in Nakasongola.
They added that they were calculating that after harvesting, they would then be able to pay back. They were then thrown into the coolers pending investigation and subsequent solution of the matter.
The angry members said they had saved money amounting to between sh500,000 and sh7,000,000 each, were banking on this to help them go through the Christmas festivities with their families, and many were at crossroads as to what to do next.
