Administrators of Kabale University are walking with their heads high following acquisition of the pioneer mental wellness centre as one of the newest among the innumerable advantages the community derives from the institute, which has given rise to hopes of taming symptoms of anxiety and depression, sometimes escalating to a point where victims may contemplate suicide.

The centre, popularly known as the KAB Mental Health Wellness Centre among the university’s population, offers a wide range of mental wellness services including counselling, therapy, support groups and education programmes.

A year later after its launch in November last year by the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine, the centre continues to demonstrate the university’s commitment to the overall wellbeing of its students and community members as a whole.

In an interview on Tuesday, the Senior Communication and Branding Officer who is the editor of the university’s quarterly KAB Newsletter Godfrey J. Ssempungu told Kyaggwe TV that the centre is an initiative representing a pioneering effort focusing primarily on the mental wellbeing of students and community members.

“We are indeed proud that Dr. Atwine, an outstanding figure in the Ugandan health sector, commended the university for the proactive approach in promoting mental health in the region, rightly appreciating that it is a pioneering initiative in the country’s universities,” Ssempungu proudly noted.

He concurred with Dr. Atwine’s view in her address at the launch last year, where she noted that the centre will attract more attention and experience a tremendous demand for their services.

Ssempungu observed that the centre is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals seeking mental health support, adding; “students and the community have access to a variety of services, resources and counselling, a gesture of the importance of mental health.”
