As a component of the campus transformation currently underway, Uganda Christian University (UCU) has displayed the rebranded format of the graduation gowns, which are taking effect beginning with the second part of this year’s graduation slated for this Friday October 25, 2024 at the main campus.
Giving a media brief about the Friday graduation, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Associate Professor Rev. Dr. John Kitayimbwa said the rebranding was necessitated by the gross abuse hitherto subjected to graduation gowns, with even people awarded certificates of attendance wearing them.
“As it were, it has been difficult to identify a university graduand from a nursery class graduand as they wear similar gowns and as a centre of excellence, we have decided to be bold and unique by moving away from the colonial black to our university colour of blue,” Dr. Kitayimbwa said.
The new gowns for the different disciplines were on Tuesday displayed to journalists, and the Academic Registrar proudly said that the new attire is going to send a message that even UCU graduands are unique in comparison to those from competitors.
In a meeting attended by guild leaders and class representatives, Dr. Kitayimbwa also said that over 1,300 students are graduating on Friday, with females forming 54% and males forming 46%.
The Director for Academic Affairs, Prof. Angella Npakol disclosed that UCU is partnering with the Accelerated Education Enterprise, and added that UCU is going to become a testing centre and to begin training teachers.

And the Guild President, Agira Birungi thanked UCU management for setting academic standards aside by rebranding the graduation gowns, saying it has added touch to the value of the university’s products.
Friday’s graduation is to be preceded by a public lecture on Wednesday, with a presentation on a reflection on the many curriculas today by the President of the Accelerated Education Enterprise (AEE).
