Angella Namirembe, the deceased.

The death of Angella Namirembe, a 3rd-year-law student at Uganda Christian University Kampala Campus, shocked many who have been following her as a human rights defender and an active youth wing politician subscribing to the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Namirembe died at Mulago Hospital where she had been admitted after involvement in a bodaboda accident on Monday at Lubiri Ring Road as she was coming from Campus from lectures.

She was a daughter of Agnes Nakandi and Robert Mutebi, residents of Mutungo Zone IV in Nakawa division, Kampala district.

The two have been in marriage for the last 29 years and God blessed them with three children, including the deceased, Namirembe who died aged 27 years.

As dictated by nature, after getting the news of her daughter’s tragic death, Mutebi started making burial arrangements, but in the course of the arrangements, he was shocked to learn that the daughter he has been taking care of for 27 years was fathered by a different man.

Mutebi said that upon reaching Mulago mortuary to pick the body, he discovered that Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze Bakireke had already sent an ambulance which had picked it and delivered it to unknown location.

“I couldn’t believe that Nambooze of the Kkobe clan had announced Namirembe’s death on her social media handles claiming to be her aunt, yet I, a member of the Mamba clan had never been informed of that,” he lamented.

He added that the last nail in the coffin was when he went to Radio CBS to deliver the death announcements and he was notified by the management that they had already received other announcements from another person by the names of Kiwanuka who lives in the diaspora and claimed paternity of the deceased

“They therefore declined to receive the announcements I had taken and advised me to liaise with my wife and get facts straight,” he said.

It was upon this advice that Mubiru contacted his wife, Nakandi to clarify on the information he had received and that though she was at first cagey, she later accepted that Kiwanuka was the father of the deceased.

“We ended up at police and separated amicably; I cannot continue keeping such an unfaithful person who has kept me in darkness for all the 27 years. I do not want to see her in my home again; I am glad that she picked her belongings as she went for the burial. Let her start from there,” he said.

Upon receiving news of Namirembe’s demise, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the NUP president also joined the rest of the community to mourn her on her social media platform.

Kyagulanyi said Namirembe was formerly the leader of the Youth Wing of the People Power movement in Buganda sub-region.
