He has now fled from his matrimonial home and taken refuge in a corner of an office in one of his schools to escape from what he calls torture and life-threatening scolds from his children and their mother.

The head of the Orthodox Anglican Church, Rt. Bp. Dr. Cornelius Kateregga Bakubanja deserted the home and left it to his wife Rev. Eron Zawedde of the Church of Uganda and their children, claiming they want to kill him and take over his property including a primary and a secondary school.

He is a resident of Gayaza B village in Kasaali Town Council in Kyotera district, where he also has a primary and a secondary school. He has fled to his secondary school and uses a small mattress he got from one of the learners.

Kateregga alleges that the last attempt by his children and his wife with whom they have been in marriage for 40 years, was to forcefully take him to Butabika Hospital and dump him there claiming he had lost his sanity.

They allegedly brought a team of bouncers to manhandle the bishop and an ambulance from Kaliisizo Hospital but that he was rescued by onlookers, leading the bouncers to run away. “They have taken my land titles and by chance, I managed to save the one where the schools are seated when I wrestled them down and took it away from them,” he said.

He narrated that he has for close to 19 years forgotten about conjugal obligations and now lives like a Catholic priest, and adds that he has come out in the open to assist other religious leaders who may be going through a similar situation but are scared to go public.

In no unclear terms, Bp. Bakubanja has appealed to women and men’s rights bodies to come out and start considering men who are suffering silently at the hands of such cruel spouses.

Villagers including his sibling, Lekoboam Kateregga lamented about what his brother is undergoing, and wondered how children can gang up with their mother to torture their biological father over wealth.

Gayaza LC I chairman, Richard Makumbi said they have sat over these matters and subsequently forwarded the matter to police for intervention. Rev. Zawedde was tight lipped.

Speaking on phone, one of the children David Walugembe simply said that true, there is a wrangle between his mother and his father, and that they separated several year ago.
