On Tuesday 22nd July 2025, luck ran out for the 26-year-old Alex Lule a.k.a Dodo, and Bruno Jjuko (25), both residents of Kalagala cell in Kalisizo Town Council in Kyotera district, when they attacked Mazima Bugagga Coffee Factory at Kifuuta village in Kabonera sub-county, robbing the proprietor Ronald Lubega of sh50m, which they grabbed from his manager Andrew Kaggwa.

Little did they know that this marked the end of their robbing gala, as RPC Ezra Tugume commanding Kyotera and Masaka police, mounted a manhunt for the two and finally cornered them at Kazigo-Kyannamukaaka village, shot at them and recovered motorcycle number UFV 988N and two SAR 15T rifles.

In the ensuing scuffle, one of the robber’s colleagues, known by the names of Lawrence Senyomo (24), was shot dead and the two fled into a forest up to Namirembe where they boarded a boda boda cycle to Bwala, boarded a second one to Nyendo, boarded yet a third one to Lukaya and finally jumped onto a taxi to Kampala in Kikajjo zone where they have been renting a room.

The police trail brought them to Nakasozi-Buddo where he had taken refuge after selling off his household property in Kikajjo at a paltry 800,000, on learning that police was tracking their movement. Lule led them to Jjuuko’s place at Nabbingo.

Lule is a born of Matale-Kinaawa in Kalisizo, while Jjuuko was born in Kalungu, but both have been masquerading as boda boda riders in Kaliisizo. They have been operating with Lawrence Ssenyomo who was shot dead, and Gerard Mwanje ‘Kigere’ who was a chapatti seller at Kalagala.

While Mwanje was arrested earlier September 2024 after gunpoint robbery on Polinaali Ssemanda, a coffee trader and proprietor of Zavuga Coffee Factory, during which they ran away with sh150m, Lule and Jjuuko managed to flee.

After arrest, and realizing that his cherished career had been terminated, Lule spilled secrets of their operations, narrating that he conceived the idea of becoming a robber in 2023 when he hatched a plan to steal a gun from a UPDF friend.

Together with Jjuuko and Mwanje they concurred and he (Lule) snatched the AK-47 gun from the soldier’s room and Kigere who had an idea of how to use it, started training them on its operation.

“Henceforth, we began waylaying travelers along Kyotera-Kalisizo road; thereafter, we decided to get into big robberies and attacked Dawson‘s filling station in Kalisizo but because we did not know how to operate the gun, by the time the bullet went off, he had passed and so escaped,” he boldly narrated.

Their next target was John Ddamulira, a coffee trader who was transferring money from Kyotera to Kaliisizo and again we failed to properly use the gun. It rapidly released a volley of bullets some of which hit Ddamulira and we successfully took his 100m/=”, he explained.

They then attacked Ssemanda of Zavuga Coffee Factory whom they threatened with a gun that had no bullets and managed to take his sh150m. Because they had nowhere to get a replenishment of ammunition, they hid the gun in Kibutamo forest, Lwankoni sub-county from where it was recovered by workers who were slashing in the forest.

In September 2024, they narrowly escaped arrest when police rounded up two of their colleagues Gerad Mwanje and Fred Ssenteza from Kaliisizo, and they fled to Kikajjo in Kampala. The dead Ssenyomo was arrested but later released after convincing security that he was innocent, but later linked up with his colleagues and they got back into business.

For two weeks they were making plans on how to get two guns from two security guards along Entebbe Road. And one evening at 8:00pm, as a security guard rushed to the gate to open for his boss, they grabbed two guns and rode away.

Their initial attack in round two was a mobile money dealer at Kasenge who lost sh19.4m. Because they were not very conversant with Kampala, they resorted to go back to Kaliisizo and Kyotera and began operating from there. Secondly Lule narrated further, Kampala was too congested and they did not want to take lives, while in Kalisizo and Kyotera, it was easy to get to the loot without releasing even a single bullet.

“On June 11, 2025, we robbed sh50m at Nsambya with only three bullets and July 2nd, we got sh40m at Kyakkonda, while on July 22, we attacked Ronald Lubega at Kifuuta Njala, the operation that brought an end to our missions. He confessed that they have been spending the money from their loot lavishly on luxurious items.

Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said preparations are in full gear to take the suspects to court for trial.
