Police at Parliament on Tuesday arrested Daniel Mangeni, the accountant of Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, over failure to account for sh548m received by the hospital beyond its approved budget for the 2023/2024 financial year.

The hospital had been allocated sh13.919bn, but records show it received and possibly spent an excess of sh548m, raising suspicions of financial impropriety.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by Butambala County MP, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, flagged the discrepancy and suspects the hospital may have been used as a conduit for embezzlement.

PAC’s actions underscore Parliament’s growing intolerance for financial mismanagement and its push to enforce accountability in public institutions.

Mangeni’s arrest marks a significant escalation in the probe, as MPs vow to get to the bottom of the unexplained funds.
