Lazaro Bidugo the chairman for Iganga Bodaboda Operators reported that in the last month alone, eight of their members were killed, seven of them in Mayuge district alone, and their bikes taken by the murderers.
The chairman for the western wing of the cyclists, Mohammed Kimbowa reported that bodaboda thefts top other crimes in Namutumba and Bugweri, and attributed this to the claim that police is foot dragging when it comes to arresting and prosecuting habitual perpetrators.
Kimbowa further said that when they arrest suspects, their colleagues help them secure release from police, and appealed to police to bend and join the cyclist’s fraternity in combating this crime.

This transpired in a meeting between police Community Liaison Officer (CLO) CP Anatoli Muleterwa and the cyclists’ leaders at Iganga district headquarters, geared at sensitizing them on the operation of the community liaison services; they decried rampant and unchecked bodaboda thefts and murder of cyclists in the region with police not doing enough to contain the situation.
Consequently, Muleterwa directed police commanders in East Busoga to mount operations specifically targeting perpetrators of these crimes.
He directed that police heads liaise with the Regional Police Commander (RPC) Ahmed Hasunira, and bring on board cyclists in a bid to bring under control the bodaboda thefts and cyclists’ murder.
Without elaborating, Muleterwa threatened to reprimand police operatives deemed to be co-operative with criminals. He also cautioned politicians bent on hiring cyclists who ride dangerously especially during the ongoing political period, to avoid this lest they face prosecution.
He assured communities that the police are going to deploy 18 policemen in sub-counties and to provide them with all necessary requirements to ensure total security. RPC Hasunira and Iganga RDC pledged to do all within their power to maintain security.
