A one billion shillings contract for construction of 11.3 kilometres of roads in Kira Municipality has been signed with MS China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCCC) and Kiru General Services, under an arrangement funded by the World Bank and overseen by the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Ministry.

The roads in the project include Bweyogerere-Bbuto-Namugongo (6.5 km), Kikonko-Namanve (1.3 km) both of which are to be constructed by CCCC, and Kireka-Kamuli-Bethany (3.5 m) to be constructed by Kiru General Services Ltd. Works to be done include laying bituminous coating, installing lamps and providing walkways.

Speaking at the signing, Kira Municipality Mayor, Julius Mutebi Nsubuga stressed the importance of involving local leaders in the work for thorough and expedited services, noting that with a population of more than 500,000 and being one of the fastest growing local settings, Kira Municipality needs community involvement in public undertakings there.

Mayor Mutebi expressed appreciation to locals for surrendering parts of their land for the work at zero cost, as one of the pre-conditions by the World Bank funders.
