Makerere Elects First Female Guild Electoral Commission Chairperson

Makerere University has elected Maureen Owomugisha as the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the Guild Electoral Commission in the institution’s 100-year history.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Owomugisha’s election marks a significant milestone for the university. In a congratulatory message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he noted that the development is historic for Makerere.

“I have congratulated Ms. Maureen Owomugisha on being elected the first woman Chairperson of the Makerere University Guild Electoral Commission in the entire one-hundred-year history of the University. We have discussed matters regarding the conduct of a free and fair Guild election,” Nawangwe said.

He added that he had met with Owomugisha to discuss preparations for a credible and transparent electoral process.

Owomugisha assumes office at a critical time as the university prepares to elect its 92nd Guild President. The previous Guild leadership, led by Churchill Ssentamu, was recently dissolved pending fresh elections.

Her leadership is expected to play a key role in overseeing the upcoming polls and ensuring a free and fair electoral process at one of Uganda’s leading institutions.
