A 39-year-old man accused of killing four toddlers at a kindergarten in Ggaba has been confirmed to be of sound mind and committed to the High Court for trial.
Christopher Okello Onyum appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following his remand to Luzira Prison on Tuesday.
During court proceedings, a medical report presented by the prosecution confirmed that Okello is mentally fit, dismissing his earlier claims of suffering from a past mental illness.

State prosecutors further told court that at the time of his arrest, Okello was found in possession of two American passports, two mobile phones, two laptops, a United States driving permit, a sanity medical form, and a certificate of good conduct.
Okello is facing four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. However, he was not allowed to take plea, as the charges are capital in nature. The Makindye Grade One Magistrate, Sarah Basemera instead committed the case to the High Court, which has jurisdiction to try such offences.
The victims of the attack who died on the spot were identified as Eteku Gideon, aged two; Kaise Alungat, aged two; Ignatius Sserwange, aged three; and Ryan Odeke, aged two. Two other children who survived the incident are currently receiving treatment at separate health facilities.
The killings occurred at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, sending shockwaves across the community and the country.
Following the incident, the government ordered the immediate closure of the kindergarten, along with two affiliated institutions—a primary and secondary school—as investigations continue.
Authorities have since called for calm, urging the public to allow the judicial process to proceed as the case moves to the High Court.
