Kabanda Accuses Otafiire, Senior NRM Figures of Using Muhoozi Criticism to Target Museveni

According to Kabanda, attempts to discredit the Chief of Defence Forces have backfired and contributed to the rise of a youth-driven political movement that increasingly views Muhoozi as a key figure in the future of the NRM.

A fresh political storm has erupted within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) after Kasambya County Member of Parliament, Daudi Kabanda, accused senior party leaders of indirectly targeting President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni through their criticism of Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Kabanda, a vocal supporter of Muhoozi and former Secretary General of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), singled out Gen. Kahinda Otafiire and other historical members of the ruling party, accusing them of enjoying the benefits of government appointments while publicly attacking the President’s son.

His remarks come in response to recent comments by Otafiire, a veteran bush war fighter, who criticized alleged government killings and extrajudicial actions. Kabanda dismissed the statements as hypocritical, arguing that such attacks have instead strengthened Muhoozi’s standing within the party and among young people.

According to Kabanda, attempts to discredit the Chief of Defence Forces have backfired and contributed to the rise of a youth-driven political movement that increasingly views Muhoozi as a key figure in the future of the NRM.

He said persistent criticism from senior party members has inadvertently accelerated what he described as a “revolution” among young supporters, many of whom have rallied behind Muhoozi’s leadership and political vision.

The latest exchange underscores growing divisions within the NRM over the role and influence of Muhoozi, whose political profile has expanded significantly in recent years amid speculation about his future ambitions.

The remarks are also likely to intensify debate within the ruling party ahead of future political contests, with competing factions increasingly taking public positions on the direction of the NRM and the succession debate surrounding President Museveni.

Neither Otafiire nor other senior NRM officials had publicly responded to Kabanda’s latest accusations by the time of publication.
