Scores of pupils were injured on Friday night after a school bus transporting learners from an educational tour was involved in a head-on collision with a sugarcane truck in Busota, Kamuli District, barely a day after the deadly King David Junior School bus crash that claimed at least 24 lives.

The latest accident occurred at around 9:45 p.m. near Busota Health Centre III when a bus carrying students of Nalango Scondary School collided with a lorry transporting sugarcane.

According to the Kamuli District Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the crash left many pupils with fractures and other severe injuries, with several reported to be in critical condition. By press time, however, no fatalities had been confirmed.

The EMS rescue team responded swiftly to the scene and evacuated the injured to nearby health facilities for emergency treatment.

“The emergency and medical wards are receiving a high number of casualties, and clinical teams are working tirelessly to resuscitate and stabilize the injured while providing definitive emergency care,” the district emergency response team said in a statement.

Authorities said the accident involved a students’ coaster and a sugarcane truck, although the circumstances surrounding the collision had not yet been established. Police had not yet released an official statement by press time, and investigations into the cause of the crash were underway.

The latest accident comes just hours after the country was plunged into mourning following the fatal crash involving pupils of King David Junior School, Ndejje, at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road.

The Kapchorwa tragedy claimed the lives of the school’s director, Tadeo Ssekidde, and at least 23 pupils after the bus they were travelling in overturned during an educational tour. Several other pupils remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

In response to the Kapchorwa disaster, the government, through the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, John Chrysostom Muyingo, announced the immediate suspension of all school educational tours across the country until further notice.

The suspension is intended to allow investigations into recent school transport accidents, strengthen safety guidelines for educational trips, and enhance road safety awareness among schools, transport operators, teachers, and other stakeholders.

Friday night’s Kamuli crash is likely to intensify concerns over the safety of school transportation, particularly during educational tours, as authorities continue to investigate both incidents.
