Security agencies have launched investigations after unknown armed assailants attempted to break into Kyegegwa Government Prison in the early hours of Friday, leaving three prison officers injured and making off with two firearms.
According to a statement issued by the Uganda Prisons Service on August 14, 2026, the attack occurred at around 1:00am when the assailants targeted officers who were deployed as night sentries at the prison.
During the attack, the suspects reportedly stole two guns—one registered as UG PRI 563615124 and another as UG Pol. 565828358—each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The injured officers have been identified as Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus (No. 6972), Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret (No. 11423) and Warder Odongo Joshua (No. 12980). They were rushed to Kyegegwa General Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
The Uganda Prisons Service said no inmates escaped during the attempted prison break.
Security agencies were immediately deployed to the scene and have commenced investigations, with efforts underway to track down the attackers and recover the stolen firearms.
Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja, the Senior Commissioner of Prisons in charge of Cooperation and Corporate Affairs, appealed to members of the public to assist security agencies with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects or the recovery of the stolen guns.
He urged anyone with relevant information to call the Prisons Service toll-free line 0800144144 or report to the nearest police station.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the attackers or the motive behind the attempted prison break, as investigations continue.
