Outcry as District Staff Dies During Childbirth at Hospital Amid Negligence Claims

Shock and grief have engulfed residents and local government staff in Bududa District following the death of a district employee who reportedly died while giving birth at Bududa Hospital, amid allegations of negligence by health workers.

The deceased has been identified as Sandra Khabuya, a secretary in the Trade and Finance Department at Bududa District Local Government. She was a resident of Busela Village, Nabafu Parish, Bushiribo Sub-county in Bududa District.

According to reports, Khabuya was taken to Bududa Hospital on Sunday, September 6, 2026, to deliver her baby. However, her family and local leaders allege that she was not attended to promptly by medical staff and later died at the facility.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, with district authorities calling for an investigation to establish what happened and whether negligence by health workers contributed to her death.

Bududa District LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Natubu condemned the incident and called for a swift investigation, urging authorities to take action against any health workers found culpable.

Natubu called for those responsible to be arrested and prosecuted if investigations establish that negligence contributed to Khabuya’s death.

Meanwhile, Bududa Resident District Commissioner Julie Namara said she was scheduled to meet hospital staff on Tuesday, September 8, to establish the circumstances surrounding the death before issuing an official statement.

Namara described the incident as serious, saying it was reportedly the fourth similar case at the hospital.

She said the latest incident should be thoroughly investigated and that the law must take its course against anyone found responsible.

The RDC also appealed to members of the public to remain calm as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding Khabuya’s death.

The incident has renewed concerns about the quality of maternal healthcare and the responsiveness of health workers at Bududa Hospital, with residents and the deceased’s family now awaiting the findings of the investigation.
