A church service at All Saints Church of Uganda in Abim District was disrupted on Sunday after a physical altercation reportedly broke out between a priest and a local council leader over an announcement.
The incident occurred on September 27, 2026, as the service was nearing its conclusion and announcements were being made, according to police and the Church of Uganda.
Police identified the two parties as Rev. Canon Richard Ongom, the archdeacon of All Saints Church, and Innocent Oyoo, the LC2 chairperson of Wiawer Ward in Abim Town Council.

The altercation caused commotion among worshippers before the matter was reported to Abim Town Council Police Station.
Abim District Police Commander SP Olang Moses said police registered two cases of assault/affray following complaints filed by the two parties.
Police issued PF3 medical forms to both parties, recorded statements from them and some witnesses, and visited the scene.
No arrests had been made by the time of the police update, with investigations still ongoing.
In a statement, Church of Uganda provincial spokesperson Adams Sadiiki confirmed the incident and said the Church had received an update from the Abim District Police Commander.
Sadiiki said that under the Church of Uganda’s established liturgical procedures, the priest presiding over a service is responsible for worship and other activities taking place during the service.
He said anyone wishing to make an announcement during a service is expected to seek permission from the priest and respect the direction given.
However, Sadiiki stressed that the Church does not condone violence or physical confrontation by anyone.
“We shall allow the Police to establish the circumstances surrounding the physical altercation, while the relevant Church authorities address any ecclesiastical and administrative matters arising from the incident,” he said.
He appealed to Christians and members of the public to remain calm as police investigations continue.
