A 19-year-old Senior Four candidate born without arms is sitting his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations using his mouth and feet, demonstrating remarkable determination to pursue his education.

Innocent Odio, a student at Akalo Comprehensive Secondary School, is writing his examinations at Lira Town College alongside 489 other candidates.

Despite being born without arms, Odio has mastered the art of holding a pen with his mouth to write legibly. He also uses his feet to operate computers, eat, dress himself and perform other daily activities.

Beyond academics, Odio has developed an interest in music and serves as a school disc jockey (DJ), showcasing his abilities in activities that extend beyond the classroom.

Odio expressed confidence in passing his UCE examinations, with ambitions of pursuing a career in law.

His education is sponsored by George Obong Aweri, the Deputy Registrar of the High Court, who is fulfilling a commitment made by his late father, Supreme Court Justice Ruby Aweri Opio, before his death in December 2022.

The support has enabled Odio to continue his education as he works towards achieving his academic and professional ambitions.

Lira Town College headteacher Levy Abongo commended Odio for his exceptional intelligence and determination, urging parents to enrol children living with disabilities in school without discrimination.

Abongo emphasised that physical limitations should not be used as a reason to deny children the opportunity to learn, develop their talents and pursue their dreams.

He also cautioned parents against sharing distressing domestic news with candidates during the national examination period, saying such information could affect their mental concentration and performance.

Odio’s experience highlights the importance of inclusive education and the role of family and community support in helping learners with disabilities overcome barriers and achieve their ambitions.
