Ndawula said that, according to close family members, the former legislator had since been making regular visits to Mulago Hospital and other health facilities.

Former Buyamba Constituency Member of Parliament Amos Mandela Mugerwa has died at Mulago National Referral Hospital, months after he was reportedly assaulted during the 2026 parliamentary election campaigns.
Mandela, who was seeking to represent Buyamba Constituency in Rakai District for the 2026–2031 term, had reportedly been attacked by a group of assailants while preparing to appear on Kisweeko Radio in Rakai Town Council.
According to a tribute shared by Stanley Ndawula, a senior journalist and a colleague, the incident happened during the campaign period, after which Mandela was admitted to hospital.
Ndawula said that, according to close family members, the former legislator had since been making regular visits to Mulago Hospital and other health facilities.

His death at Mulago has prompted renewed concern about violence in politics, with Ndawula questioning why political competition had become a matter of life and death.
“Why would politicians take this game as a Do or DIE thing?” he asked in the tribute, while mourning Mandela as a brother.
“Sail well, my Brother Amos,” the tribute read.
Mandela’s reported assault during the campaigns highlights concerns about the safety of candidates and supporters during election periods, when political rivalry can sometimes turn violent.
