The Minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, has cleared a bank loan that had put the only family home of five orphaned children in Kanungu District at risk of being sold, following the disappearance of their uncle who mortgaged the property.

Balaam announced that he had paid off the outstanding loan in full to Centenary Bank, bringing to an end the children’s fears of losing their inheritance through a possible eviction.

The plight of the children came to public attention when one of them, a young girl, tearfully narrated their predicament during Balaam’s Expose the Corrupt rally in Kanungu.

According to the minister, the children’s uncle had used their only family home as security to obtain a bank loan before disappearing, leaving the five orphans facing the possibility of losing their inheritance.

In a statement posted on his X account, Balaam said the outstanding loan had been cleared to zero, paving the way for the property title to be transferred into the children’s names.

“Arrangements will now be made to transfer the property title into the names of the five children and have it appropriately caveated to safeguard their interests and protect their inheritance,” he said.

Beyond rescuing the family home, Balaam pledged to support all five children through their education up to Senior Six.

He commended the newly elected Kanungu District LC5 chairman, Mr Byamukama, for offering the children scholarships at his school.

The minister also acknowledged other individuals whose contributions helped resolve the family’s predicament.

Balaam said he would task the LC5 chairman, together with the children’s aunt and caretaker, to oversee their welfare, education and continued protection to ensure they grow up in a safe and supportive environment.

He described the intervention as more than settling a bank debt, saying it was aimed at protecting the inheritance of vulnerable children, restoring their hope and giving them an opportunity to build a better future.

The minister’s intervention comes as a relief to the five children, whose family home had been threatened by a financial obligation reportedly incurred by their uncle.
