Muhoozi’s remarks have attracted attention because he has increasingly used his verified X account, @mkainerugaba, as a platform for communicating his views on military, political and national affairs.
Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has hinted at a possible departure from the military’s top command, while making remarks that appear to suggest he could be eyeing another high-ranking government position currently occupied by Vice-President Jessica Alupo.
In a series of posts on his X account, Muhoozi indicated that his time as CDF was nearing its end, adding that he intended to hand over the office to another qualified military officer in the coming months.
“My time as CDF is coming to an end. I have accomplished all the tasks my God gave me. In a few months I will handover this office to a qualified officer. I shall dedicate my life to Christ after that,” he posted.
However, another post appeared to raise questions about his next political or public-service ambitions.
“I hear there is a young woman called Jessica who has been warming my seat for long enough. Maybe it’s time for her to leave,” Muhoozi wrote.

The remarks were widely interpreted as an apparent reference to Alupo, Uganda’s Vice-President, and an indication that Muhoozi could be positioning himself for the country’s second-highest political office.
The comments have fuelled speculation that the military chief could be eyeing the Vice-President’s office, although he has not explicitly declared his intention to become Alupo’s successor.
Alupo, a retired Major, has served as Vice-President since June 2021. She was reappointed to the position following the 2026 general elections and approved by Parliament in May 2026.
Muhoozi’s remarks have attracted attention because he has increasingly used his verified X account, @mkainerugaba, as a platform for communicating his views on military, political and national affairs.
Interestingly, in another post on Friday, Muhoozi appeared to soften the impression that his departure was imminent, saying: “Don’t worry I’m still around. At least for another year.”
The statement has added another layer of uncertainty to his earlier announcement that he would hand over the CDF office in a few months.
Muhoozi was appointed CDF by his father, President Yoweri Museveni, in March 2024, replacing Gen. Wilson Mbadi.
His latest remarks have therefore raised two major questions: Is Muhoozi genuinely preparing to leave the military command, and could he be positioning himself for a bigger political office, possibly the Vice-Presidency?
Under Uganda’s constitutional arrangements, the Vice-President is appointed by the President, subject to parliamentary approval. Muhoozi’s remarks alone do not constitute an appointment or confirmation of a succession plan.
For now, neither the President nor the government has announced any changes to the country’s top political or military leadership. It remains to be seen whether Muhoozi’s latest pronouncements will translate into actual changes in government, and when such changes might happen.
The timing and destination of Muhoozi’s anticipated departure from the military remain unclear.
