A Call to Grow 15m Trees as Church of Uganda Commemorates 150 Years

2 minutes, 22 seconds Read

Each Diocese is called to grow 385,000 trees over the next two years—192,000 per year—a goal both ambitious and attainable. These trees will rise from diocesan lands, church compounds, schools, farms, and personal property.

Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow!

As the dawn broke over hills and villages across the nation, church bells echoed with a renewed sense of purpose. The Church of Uganda was not only preparing to celebrate 150 years of God’s faithfulness on 30th June 2027—it was preparing to plant a legacy that would outlive the celebration itself.

This vision did not emerge overnight. During the Provincial Assembly of August 2024, a resolution was passed declaring March as Environment Month. It was more than a calendar adjustment; it was a spiritual commitment. A calling to care for creation as an act of worship.

Building upon earlier pastoral reflections, the Church now steps boldly into a two-year journey of environmental stewardship. Under the banner:

“15 Million Trees for 150 Years: A Legacy of Stewardship for a Greener Future”

the entire province—dioceses, parishes, communities, partners, and stakeholders—is invited to take part in a historic campaign of tree growing.

From the beginning of creation, trees have symbolized life, healing, and divine provision. Scripture reminds us that humanity was placed in the garden not merely to dwell in it, but to tend and keep it. As written in the Bible, “One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” (Psalm 145:4 NKJV)

Now, one generation plants so another may flourish.

Each Diocese is called to grow 385,000 trees over the next two years—192,000 per year—a goal both ambitious and attainable. These trees will rise from diocesan lands, church compounds, schools, farms, and personal property. Every seedling recorded. Every sapling counted. Every effort woven into a national testimony of faith in action.

The phased approach ensures careful planning, strong community participation, and lasting environmental impact. Through the Provincial Secretary and the Directorate of Household & Community Transformation, coordination will guide the campaign forward with unity and accountability.

On 3rd March 2026, as Environment Month begins, the campaign will be officially unveiled. But the true unveiling will not be on a stage—it will be in the soil, in the hands of children pressing seedlings into the earth, in families nurturing young trees beside their homes, and in congregations praying over the land entrusted to them.

As the Church reflects with gratitude on 150 years of witness and mission, it also looks ahead with courage. The forefathers built foundations of faith. This generation will plant forests of hope.

For the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.

Let us unite.
Let us plant.
Let us grow trees—for God’s glory and for generations yet to come.

By the Archbishop of the Province of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu
