Following days of speculation, it has finally been established that the chief mobiliser for the National Unity Platform (NUP) Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu popularly known as ‘Chairman Nyanzi’, was taken to an unspecified military facility after recording a statement at Wandegeya Police Station.
Nyanzi is said to have been abducted by armed suspected security agents last week, and family members were on Wednesday organizing a press conference at his home at Kyebando, to brief them about the matter, but put off the conference on being informed that he was detained at Wandegeya Police Station.

A family team headed by his uncle Willy Ssemakula, including Nyanzi’s wife and children, rushed to Wandegeya police on receiving the news of his arrest, but were told that he had not yet been taken there. It was later established that in the evening of the same day, he recorded a statement at Wandegeya from where he was taken to a military hospital as he was in a frail state.
According to one of NUP’s lawyers, George Musisi, it is unfortunate that when he (Musisi) arrived at the police station, they denied having Nyanzi in their custody, but later recorded a statement from him in absence of his advocates.
In the midst of all this, NUP officials are still engaged in a yet unfruitful search for two members of the party’s electoral commission said to have been abducted at Lungala on Masaka road in Mpigi district as they returned to Kampala after attending a burial in Rakai.
The missing two include the commission’s secretary, Alex Rovans Lwanyaga and Eddie Kayabula. The two were abducted together with other two commission members including its head Mercy Walukamba and Rahmah Ali Malagala.
However, NUP Principal, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu reported on Friday that Walukamba and Rahmah Ali were driven from CMI in Mbuya and dumped at SIU Kireka from where they were later released.
Kyagulanyi’s statement posted on X goes as follows;
“After exposing the criminals and the sustained pressure from all of you, this night, they drove @NUP_Ug’s Election Management Officials Mercy Walukamba and Rahma Juma from Mbuya (CMI/DIS) and dumped them at SIU Kireka, from where they were released! They have told us how they were subjected to all manner of threats and intimidation and subjected to interrogation about very ridiculous things but they are of strong spirits. Let’s keep the pressure on UNTIL ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS ARE OUT and UNTIL UGANDA IS FREE.”

In a related development, nine other NUP members have been arrested. In addition to the two ‘foot soldiers’ arrested earlier at Nansana including Rashid Kinobe and Sharif Kiyemba, seven others were arrested on Wednesday within the precincts of the NUP headquarters at Makerere Kavule as they prepared to join members who were attending a prayer service for jailed Dr. Kizza Besigye.
According to party members, a combined force of police and UPDF soldiers who had earlier in the morning swarmed the area, arrested whoever approached the vicinity dressed in red attire, bundled in waiting drone minibuses and drove them away.
