Survivors and onlookers said the driver was trying to save an errant motorcyclist who carelessly crossed the road as the bus approached and in the process, it overturned and caught fire, killing three people instantly and injuring scores of others.
According to Sezzibwa police spokesperson Hellen Butoto, three people including Musimbi died instantly, while over fifty survivors were rushed to various hospitals including St. Charles Lwanga Buikwe, Makindu Health Centre and St. Francis Nyenga Hospital.
One of the survivors Joseph Mutyaba who was travelling from Ziroobwe in Luweero district and travelling to Mbale where he was destined to begin his construction work, told reporters from his Kawolo Hospital bed that he remembers being pulled out of the wreckage while profusely bleeding, with scores of other people crying out for help and struggling to get out through the windows.
Mary Nanzaala of Banda in Nakawa Division, said she realised she could not push through the window because she had sustained fractures in the hip bones and could not independently stand without support.
One of the rescuers William Lubega said James Musimbi was trapped by the bus which had ejected him during the accident, and that as people were trying to pull him from under the overturned bus, he realised they could not manage and so advised rescuers to attend to other survivors and let him die.
