On Friday evening, Aggie Namumpa of Aggie Fashions Men’s Wear Boutique in Ntinda closed business as usual and boarded a bodaboda back home with her day’s proceeds tucked into her bag.
As the cyclist negotiated the Naalya roundabout, two bodabodas intercepted the one she was travelling on, and as one blocked Namumpa’s cyclist from proceeding, a passenger travelling on the one from behind jumped off his bike, grabbed her bag and started tugging it.
In an attempt to resist the robbery, she strengthened her grip on the bag whereupon the thug pulled it harder and pushed her off, and she fell hitting her head on the tarmac as the robbers sped off. Rescuers rushed her to nearby TMI Hospital in Naalya but she had breathed her last by the time they arrived.
According to Assistant KMP Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire expressed the view that the thieves had possibly got wind that she was travelling with a sizeable amount of money and organized the attack. Owoyesigyire said police have linked up with other security agencies to track down and arrest the thugs.
He said police is going to use street camera footage to track Namumpa’s movement from the time she closed her shop to the time of the attack, and to follow registration numbers of the motorcycles used by the attackers.
He added that police is going to station its men at the spot where the deceased was robbed because, he added, it is a noted black spot frequented by criminals.
However, John Magoola, a resident, blamed the government for not putting to proper use the many street cameras in which it invested heavily, saying that in many cases, there are claims that the cameras are faulty.
And Edith Nayera suggested that more vocational institutions be set up and youths encouraged to seek training and get jobs; she argued that unemployment is one of the reasons for increased crime.
