General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, has promoted Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga to Major General and appointed him Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces.
This appointment took effect in December 2025, following the illness of Major General Francis Takirwa, who passed away today on February 7, 2026.
Major General Ssemwanga brings extensive experience to his new role, having recently served as Contingent Commander of UPDF troops in Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM). Prior to his deployment, he commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Kakiri, Wakiso District.
