Daughter to Besigye’s Co-Accused Joins Politics to Fight Unfriendly Laws

As of now, a cross section of politicians from many parties have expressed interest in running for Malende’s parliamentary seat. Some of them include; Zahara Luyirika, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) speaker of NUP, Winfred Nankandi (NUP), Amina Nanziri Lukanga, former Resident City Commissioner for Kampala, expressed interest in the NRM party ticket.

Mariam Obeid Lutale, daughter to Haji Obeid Lutale who is languishing in jail together with former FDC leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has joined Besigye’s new political party the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) to influence alterations in the laws which have kept her father incarcerated for months now.

A lawyer by profession, Mariam has registered with the PFF and on Friday picked nomination papers to stand against incumbent Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

She was accorded a warm welcome by PFF supporters led by the party electoral commission (EC) chairman Michael Kabaziguruka.

She was flanked by a host of supporters who kept waving the two-finger signal amid ululations as a sign of encouragement for her bold decision.

As of now, a cross section of politicians from many parties have expressed interest in running for Malende’s parliamentary seat.

Some of them include; Zahara Luyirika, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) speaker of NUP, Winfred Nankandi (NUP), Amina Nanziri Lukanga, former Resident City Commissioner for Kampala, expressed interest in the NRM party ticket.

Others are; Husnah Muwanga, who is also seeking to take the NRM party flag, Shamim Nanfuma who is among those seeking for NRM party flag, Safina Sofia Kenyangi, the national chairperson for the Uganda Muslim Women Council at Gadaffi National Mosque, who has strong connections with the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) in Kyambogo, Kampala and Joelia Zake Namuli, who is considered as the leader for all. Namuli is also seeking the NRM party flag.

Nana Mwafrika Namata, a notorious protester in Kampala against corruption, Stecia Mayanja, a local musician and the party president for the NPP, and Grace Nakanwagi, the representative of the Democratic Front.
