The chairperson for Mukono Municipality Headteachers’ Association, Susan Wamala Sserunkuuma noted that the headteachers’ status in community has risen with more respect being accorded to them, thanks to the flamboyant infrastructure in their schools.

The Commissioner for Urban Administration in the Ministry of Local Government, Charles Magumba has advised teachers to turn a deaf ear to people urging them to disassociate with the NRM government, saying they are opportunists wishing evil for the education sector which has vastly benefitted through infrastructure development in schools.
He was addressing members of Mukono Municipality Head Teachers Association who assembled at Grand Praclos Gardens located at Nassuuti Cell in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality, for their end-of-year party, where he was chief guest.

Magumba likened people advising teachers to de-campaign government, to a person advising one to cut the tree he is sitting on.
“These people are asking you to discard a government that has created a conducive working atmosphere for you, so that they can bring in their own which will throw you out and replace you immediately,” he noted.
The commissioner asked teachers to be cognizant of improved infrastructure like roads, markets, health units and others, which he said are pre-requisites for an improved education system, and so a direct improvement in their operations as teachers as far as preparing children as a future work and leadership force is concerned.

“Government may not directly create jobs but when it facilitates an enabling situation, we get industries like those in Namanve, Mbalala and elsewhere; much as these set ups are private, it is an enabling atmosphere that sees their birth and this is attributable to the NRM government,” Magumba noted.
Mukono Municipality Town Clerk, Francis Byabagambi outlined achievements scored by schools by way of infrastructure development, citing numerous classroom blocks, toilet facilities, desks, and others, and was happy to note that no more learners sit on the bare ground during classes in Mukono Municipality.
He told teachers that with all these facilities put in place through government funding, whoever tells them to discard it for non-performance must be rejected for myopic and being unappreciative.
“Government has invested heavily in other sectors like the parish development model (PDM), tarmacking and improving roads and others, and whoever says the government has given you nothing is a liar,” Byabagambi noted.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Mukono Municipality Rhonda Tiitwe Kagaga cautioned teachers to be careful about what they feed to pupils, noting that because they are dealing with young innocent brains that consume whatever is given to them, sabotage done by wrong inputs could go a long way in damaging society.
Without mentioning names, the DRDC disclosed that she has received a list of head teachers who have been holding school meetings and specifically inviting anti-government elements to address them, and cautioned them against what she called ‘washing clothes and then drying them in mud’.
She said, “Government has demonstrated that the best way to offer protection to all Ugandans equitably and without discrimination is through provision of infrastructure which is used indiscriminately, citing schools, roads, hospitals and markets all of which should be enough reason for giving support to the NRM government.

The chairperson for Mukono Municipality Headteachers’ Association, Susan Wamala Sserunkuuma noted that the headteachers’ status in community has risen with more respect being accorded to them, thanks to the flamboyant infrastructure in their schools.
This, Wamala noted, has in turn brought to an end the situation where teachers used to be looked upon with inferiority and lack of trust from parents who entrust their children to the teachers for proper upbringing and counselling.
