Joyce Nakku (43), a mother who abandoned her daughter at Pherry Junior School at the beginning of the term, reappeared on the closing day with an apology.
Nakku had enrolled her daughter in Primary Two and only paid sh190,000 towards the sh270,000 required for a full school uniform.
However, after being advised to deposit the remaining amount, plus the fees and other necessities, she asked teachers to keep the child while she went to withdraw money from the bank and never returned.
Upon reappearing, Nakku apologized to the school administration for ignoring their calls, citing her difficult circumstances.
She revealed that she had separated from the father of her children, who disputed the paternity of one of the children and refused to take full responsibility for the daughter.
Although they agreed to split school fees 50/50 for their two older children, Nakku’s situation worsened after losing her job at Nsambya Hospital and failing to relocate to Canada as she had planned.
The school sympathized with Nakku and encouraged her to seek counseling and mental support from the Municipality Probation Officer.
School Resident Director, Sylivia Okite urged Nakku not to give up on her child’s care and invited her to return for the new term.
Notably, Okite revealed that a good Samaritan had paid sh100,000 for the girl and offered to pay sh500,000 at the beginning of the term.
