Female Nursing Trainee, Roasted Maize Seller Arrested Among Armed Robbers’ Gang

Two women including a Rakai nursing trainee and a roadside roasted maize seller are among the three people arrested alongside an unidentified mason in a police swoop at Kalagala village in Kaliisizo.

The three are suspected to be connected to a robbery last week at Mazima Bugagga business premises.

The parents of the nursing trainee whose names have been withheld are residents of Kalagala from where she was arrested, while the maize seller was arrested from Kaliisizo. They are said to be lovers to wanted notorious armed robbers behind several robberies and murders of traders in Kaliisizo.

Yiga said Ssenyumu was in September arrested in connection to a robbery on a business man Polinaali Ssemanda of Zavuga Coffee Factory in Kaswa-Kaliisizo who lost sh150m to the robbers, but that although he was exonerated and released, he was dismissed from the village.

Ssenyumu’s body was collected by his mother’s relatives who took it to Kooki in Rakai for burial. Another youth identified as Alex Lule alias Dodo, implicated as Ssenyumu’s accomplice, and another ally called Joseph Kagimu, are alleged to be part of the gang that robbed Ssemanda, but escaped the arrest.

Others reported to be part of the dreaded gang include Fred Ssenteza formerly a boda boda rider, Gerald Mwanje also known as ‘Kigere’ (24), both of whom have long since been arrested with exhibits of cars and luxurious household items they had bought. They are said to have engaged several girlfriends and rented expensive houses for them in Kaliisizo.

In the robbery at Ssemanda’s place, they had an AK-47 rifle which had been stolen from a UPDF soldier. Lumber men chanced on the gun hidden in Kibutomu forest in Lwankoni sub-county.

Masaka Region police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said the rifle had been stolen in 2022 from a UPDF soldier who was guarding UNEB examinations at Kaliisizo police.
