Police carried out search operations in multiple locations, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of more than 20 stolen number plates.

Police in Katwe have arrested five suspects in connection with a surge in motor vehicle number plate thefts reported in the areas of Ndejje, Mutundwe and Masaja.

According to preliminary police findings, the suspects are believed to have been targeting parked vehicles, removing their number plates, and then leaving behind phone contacts. They would later demand money from the vehicle owners in exchange for returning the stolen plates.

Authorities say the scheme has caused concern among motorists in the affected areas, with several victims reportedly contacted and asked to pay ransoms.

Police carried out search operations in multiple locations, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of more than 20 stolen number plates.

Some of the recovered plates include UAX 009/C, UAZ 753/W, UA 613BQ, UAY 398/Z, and UBH 385/H.

Investigations are ongoing to identify additional victims and determine whether more suspects are involved in the racket. Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
