Former Makerere University vice-chancellor Prof. Livingstone Luboobi has passed on. Luboobi, a distinguished professor of biomathematics who led the university between 2004 and 2009, died at the age of 81 of an undisclosed illness.
Announcing the news of his passing yesterday, Makerere University vice-chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, stated: “I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Professor Livingstone Luboobi, former vice-chancellor of Makerere University. A distinguished professor of mathematics, Professor Luboobi served as vice-chancellor from 2004 to 2009, guiding the university through a critical period of transformation and growth. His contributions to academia and leadership at Makerere will be remembered with great respect and admiration. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Luboobi, who replaced Prof John Ssebuwufu in 2004, started working at Makerere University in 1973. He will be remembered for steering Makerere University through turbulent times.

In 1990/91, when he was head of mathematics department, the then vice-chancellor, Prof. Senteza Kajubi, gave him the mantle to steer the task force that drafted the first locally formulated Strategic Plan of Makerere.
Born on Christmas Day in 1944, to Lameka Serwadda and Sanyu Nalubega, both peasants of Mitondo village in Rakai district, Luboobi grew up under difficult conditions and learnt the value of hard work.
