Four people have been declared dead and 13 injured following a fatal accident that happened at around 6:40am.

Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson says the accident happened at Amungura Bridge along the Busia–Tororo Road, involving a motor vehicle registration number UA 889AM & a pedestrian.

Kananura said that preliminary investigations indicate that the taxi driver, while traveling at high speed, knocked down and killed a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road.

“The driver lost control, veered off the road, struck the bridge and plunged into river Malaba below the bridge killing three passengers and injuring 13 others including the driver,” he reported.

He added that the victims were rushed to Tororo Hospital for medical attention. “The deceased have been taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for postmortem examinations. The vehicle was towed to Busia police station as investigations commenced.”

Kananura urged all motorists to strictly observe speed limits and yield to pedestrians, particularly in busy areas to prevent such tragic incidents.
