The Nigerian government has blocked about 13.5 million social media accounts for sharing offensive content online and breaching the 2024 Code of Practice.

Authorities said the crackdown spanned across major platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), with roughly 59 million pieces of harmful content taken down.

Officials say the move is part of tighter oversight of the country’s rapidly growing digital space, arguing that while social media fuels communication and commerce, it also poses great risks such as misinformation, cyberbullying, fraud, and exploitation.
