Officials say the Labour Day event will not only celebrate the contribution of workers to national development but also showcase homegrown innovations that are transforming workplaces and industries.

Uganda will mark the 2026 International Labour Day celebrations in Buikwe District, with a strong focus on innovation, decent work, and strengthening the country’s workforce to drive economic growth.

The national event, organized by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, will be held under the theme: “Safeguarding Uganda’s Progress: Empowering the Workforce and Promoting Decent Work for Competitive Enterprises.”

As part of the preparations, the ministry has issued a call for innovators across the country to participate in exhibitions during the celebrations. The invitation targets enterprises, registered companies, Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs), and organized groups with solutions that contribute to improving livelihoods and productivity.

According to the ministry, the exhibition will provide a platform for innovators whose work promotes decent employment, empowers workers, enhances enterprise competitiveness, and adds value to products and services. The initiative is also aimed at highlighting practical solutions that support Uganda’s broader economic progress.

Officials say the Labour Day event will not only celebrate the contribution of workers to national development but also showcase homegrown innovations that are transforming workplaces and industries.

Buikwe District is expected to host thousands of participants, including government officials, private sector players, workers’ representatives, and development partners. The exhibition segment is anticipated to be one of the key highlights, offering innovators visibility and opportunities to connect with potential partners and investors.

The ministry emphasized that the focus on innovation aligns with the government’s commitment to creating sustainable jobs, improving working conditions, and building a competitive economy driven by skilled and empowered labour.

International Labour Day, observed annually on May 1, is a global event that recognizes the efforts and achievements of workers while also addressing challenges affecting labour markets.

Further details on application procedures and participation guidelines for exhibitors are expected to be communicated by the ministry in due course.
