A 45-year-old resident of Mayuge Town Council who poured acid on his former lover six years ago, has been convicted of the offence by Iganga Chief Magistrate Daniel Epobu Kiboko.
Charles Basoga on June 20, 2019 approached Rebecca Babirye, 40, in the night hours in Sese zone, Mayuge Town Council, drowsed her with acid and fled.

Expounding on the bodily harm caused to the victim, Tumusiime said her genital area, the eyes, the nose and other parts were so damaged that she will never be able to use them naturally for the rest of her life.

The State Attorney also told court that the victim’s family has spent more than sh400m for treatment, including travelling abroad to Turkey to seek more specialized medical treatment.
In his submission, the defence lawyer, Victoria Bwenene appealed for a lenient sentence on the basis that his client was a first offender and was remorseful, and that considering the period he has spent on remand, he is now a reformed man.
The magistrate set today April 10, 2025 as the date to pass the sentence, as tension gripped relatives and the convict.
Babirye, who was working as a law enforcement officer at the time of the acid attack on her, said that her ex-husband with whom they have three children could have developed jealousy after their separation.
