Mukono High Court Judge, Jackeline Mwondha has turned down an application by Proscovia Auma who last year allegedly poured acid to two people including a mother and her 12-year old child, inflicting grave wounds all over the minor’s body. Auma was further remanded at Kauga prison in Mukono.
Towards the end of 2024 at Kateete village in Kasawo sub-county, Mukono district, Sylvia Achola was with her child Janet Kawuka, the acid burn victim, when Auma poured acid intending to harm the mother but accidently she more gravely injured the innocent child.
Auma claims Achola befriended her husband called Sunday Mayombwe and produced a child with him.

Trial of her case is still ongoing in a lower court in Mukono but Auma recently decided to file her bail application with the high court. According to the prosecutor Josephine Nanyonga, the trial magistrate declined to grant her bail after hearing evidence of six people incriminating Auma.
The magistrate is said to have turned down her bail application after noting that the victim’s gaping wounds were so traumatizing and that considering the rising cases of child molestation, it would be inconsiderate to grant Auma bail.
The judge accordingly directed that the accused be returned to Kauga prison and her file referred back to the original court for finalisation of trial. Pleas by Auma’s lawyer that the case is bailable and that it is her constitutional right to be granted bail did not change the judge’s decision.

Auma had come with sureties including her husband Sunday Mayombwe and her brother Ponsiano Obonyo, and a number of residents from Kateete village.
Michael Kawuka, the victim’s father, appreciated the judge for the bold decision to continually deny the accused bail, noting that his child no longer goes to school because of the grievous injury inflicted on her.
The mother, Sylvia Achola prayed to court to ensure they receive justice and force Sunday, the accused’s husband, to meet medical bills for their child’s treatment.
