When she developed labour pains on August 14, 2025, Rose Aina, a resident of Wamala cell in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso district, was rushed to Kawempe National Referral Hospital by her husband Meddie Ntambi where she delivered normally.
Later however, medical personnel gave her the baby wrapped in clothes and packed in a box, with a declaration that it was dead, along with documents confirming the baby’s death.
On getting home where they were making burial preparations, they discovered that the baby was alive, whereupon they quickly took it back to hospital and handed it to the doctors who, after a few minutes, returned the baby and gave it to them, with the same statement that it was dead.

The parents were not satisfied and so opened up a case against Dr. Godfrey James Aburi, Dr. Kibuuka Balikuddembe and Nurse Winnie Namatovu.
They were arrested on Thursday last week, charged in Kawempe High Court before Justice Damalie Agumasiimwe who remanded them to Luzira prison.
When they re-appeared in a fully packed court, the head of Kawempe National Referral Hospital, Dr. Emma Byaruhanga was in attendance along with officials from Makerere University where the two doctors are undertaking Masters Degree courses.
Their lawyer, Lawrence Jumba applied for court bail but the prosecution rejected saying they needed more time to thoroughly investigate the matter.
However, the court later accepted their prayer and granted them bail of sh5m each, not cash. They will reappear on November 21, 2025.
