By the close of Wednesday August 14, 2024, day five after the Kiteezi tragedy, the Police confirmed the death toll to have risen to 30. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, this follows the six bodies which were retrieved on Wednesday.
Regarding the communication from the Office of the Prime Minitser issued on Wednesday, they are having a total of 175 people who were displaced by the Kiteezi landfill and they are currently having temporally shelter at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School Playground. These include 50 children, 84 women and 41 men.
Onyango said that 39 people have been registered as missing and these include 35 who are community members and four who were garbage collectors.
“Thirty-three homes are suspected to have been covered by the debris on Saturday, August 10, 2024,” he said.
Last night, Onyango also reported that police arrested five suspects who were impersonating as victims of the tragic incident in Kiteezi. He said that they were also looking for compensation and relief items. The suspects are detained at Kiteezi Police Station on charges of impersonation.
Among the retrieved on Wednesday are Hairati Natumanya (20), Ronald Lwere, Moses Owori (03), Richard Okello (31), Jane Alowo (33), and Jane Achengi (06).
