According to authorities, the incident occurred near St. Mary’s Catholic Church Kyamuhunga as the children were walking home after lunch.
Tragedy struck St. Mary’s Primary School Kyamuhunga on February 19, 2026, after two pupils were killed by a lightning strike, police have confirmed.
The victims were identified as Maria Ainembabazi (7), a Primary One pupil, and Augustine Ainomukama (10), a Primary Five pupil. Both children were residents of Gongo Cell in Kyamuhunga Ward, Bushenyi District.
According to authorities, the incident occurred near St. Mary’s Catholic Church Kyamuhunga as the children were walking home after lunch. Lightning reportedly struck the area, killing the two pupils instantly.

The Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Apollo Tayebwa, said officers responded swiftly to the scene and managed the situation in line with established procedures.
“Investigations are ongoing, and we will keep the public informed of any developments,” SP Tayebwa said.
He urged members of the public to observe lightning safety precautions, especially during the rainy season, when such incidents are more common. Police also extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the eternal repose of the young pupils.
The tragic incident has left the Kyamuhunga community in shock, with parents and residents calling for increased awareness about lightning safety to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
