The Vicar General of Lugazi Diocese, Msgr. Dr. Richard Kayondo has advised pilgrims for this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations falling on 3rd June, to register at their home parishes and have their names accredited so that proper arrangements can be made for their security and safety.

Msgr. Kayondo who represented the Bishop of Lugazi Diocese, Christopher Kakooza disclosed that the 30th May has been declared the pilgrimage day for school going children so that they can have a bit more time to understand better and appreciate the gift of the Uganda martyrs given to Ugandans by God.

He was on Monday giving an update on this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ day celebrations to the media, in a meeting held at the diocesan headquarters at Lugazi. Last year’s Catholic Bishops’ Conference chose Lugazi diocese to lead this year’s celebrations.

“We appeal to all pilgrims to liaise with the security details in order to have a safe pilgrimage to and from Namugongo. As Lugazi Diocese, we shall have our grand entry to Namugongo on the June 1st, travelling on foot, and we intend to arrive at Namugongo at 5:00pm,” Msgr. Kayondo said, adding;

“We shall have three points where Christians from the diocese will converge before starting their journey, at Nkokonjeru parish, Naggalama parish and at the cathedral headquarters.”

This year’s pilgrimage is to be held under the theme: “Oh Lord, Let Me See Again; I, Your Pilgrim of Hope” and, given that it is falling a few days after election of the new Pope Pope Leo XIV, the Vicar General implored Christians to pray for him for good health and a successful ministry in the chair of St. Peter.

Without declaring how much money is budgeted for the celebrations or the source of funds, he thanked all those who have contributed and those who have promised to contribute to the success of this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations, adding that they expect to have a colourful celebration.
