Finally, the State Minister for Housing, Persis Namuganza has decided to stand as an independent candidate in the 2026 race for Bukono County parliamentary seat.

Namuganza will use the clock as her symbol and under the theme ‘Okulwo Obukono Obutebenkevu’ (For peaceful Bukono).

On declaration of her rival contestant, Emmanuel Magada as having won the NRM ticket for Bukono County seat, Namuganza immediately declared her intention to stand as an independent in next year’s general elections and she attributed her woes to the NRM national Electoral Commission chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi and the Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among.

The latter made the final declaration on Monday at the party headquarters at Kyaddondo where all the rival parties from Namutumba district met the members of the EC and they were given a final verdict which left Namuganza and her team on the losers’ side.

She angrily said that she had won the Bukono County party elections but that she was edged out in favour of Maganda and attributes her loss to intervention of the two officials who she blames for having given directions meant to make her lose.

She said, “It is Tanga and Among who orchestrated the fraudulent process that denied me and other contenders our well-deserved victories”.

Explaining, Namuganza said the two were giving orders to the party registrar in the district to frustrate her and her entire team.

However, Dr. Tanga scorned Namuganza saying it is so frustrating for the entire minister to lose such an election, an indication that her electorate are missing out on her services.

He further said that again, declaring a bid to again stand as an independent is as well a shame and asked those who have such intentions to give up and plan supporting the party flag bearers.

Indicators are high that the probability of seeing many other NRM losers in the primaries taking Namuganza’s stand is so high, following the over 100 petitioners who have reportedly raised a red flag over outcome of the elections, with some threatening to stand as independent candidates despite the overt and unconcealed stand of the party national chairman President Museveni opposing this.
