The move by the State Minister for Microfinance Harunah Kyeyune Kasolo to unseat former Tourism Minister Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi reached a point of no-return when he convinced Mityana NRM leaders into blessing him for the Buganda region Vice Chairmanship slot.

The heated meeting held at Mityana School of Nursing was attended by NRM aspirants for various posts including Mityana chairman John Kintu, Kassanda district NRM chairman Michael Bukenya, Kasambya NRM chairman David Kabanda and others.

They unanimously agreed to pass a vote supporting Kasolo, arguing that they have not benefited from Kiwanda’s leadership despite his long stay in the office.  In a statement apparently calculated at portraying himself as a better man, Kasolo told the aspiring leaders that the Buganda party leader enjoys privileged opportunities in lobbying for his area.

Hakim Kyeswa, also in the race.

Kasolo who has been traversing Buganda region under the on-going “Buganda For Museveni” campaign, was asked to ensure that lower party leaders are financially facilitated because they also spend a lot while canvassing for votes for the President.

Kasolo seems to have an upper hand over Kiwanda because he is overtly supported by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and is usually seen in the company of its Secretary General, David Kabanda.

All this notwithstanding, Kiwanda who is also the chairman of the National Consultative Forum says he is not  scared because democratically and constitutionally, everybody’s free to contest for any elective post, adding that before becoming a member of the central executive committee (CVEC), he had to undergo an election round.

Although he claims to be moving smoothly with his campaigns, onlookers think he may need to take extra efforts to win back leaders’ hearts which they contend have been taken by Kasolo.

Meanwhile, other contenders for the CEC position include Kayunga NRM chairman Moses Kaliisa Karangwa who was beaten by Kiwanda in 2015. NRM spokesperson for Mukono Hakim Kyeswa is also vying for the post, and his area of campaign is that because the party was badly trounced in the last round of elections, it calls for fresh, energetic blood like him to regain the lost glory.

He claims that his election to the post will see many youths attracted back to party circles because he knows them well since he frequents them in their ghettos.
