Police have started investigations into the possible cause of death for a prisoner who collapsed and died at Hoima Government Prison.
The deceased has been identified as Stephen Mbabazi (38), a resident of Bujumbura East in Hoima City.
Mbabazi who was on remand on charges of murder collapsed and died on Thursday at 9:00am.
Mbabazi on Tuesday developed stomach complications and was taken for treatment at the Prison clinic but the prison authorities communicate that Mbabazi’s conditions later improved.
However, on Thursday his condition again deteriorated and the Prison authorities mobilized to take him to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for specialized medical attention but he collapsed and died at the Prison gate.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson said that they are waiting for the postmortem report to reveal the possible cause of Mbabazi’s death.
In December, an inmate died in Hoima government prison. The deceased was then identified as Yuda Mugisa who was a convict on murder charges. Mugisa reportedly developed an illness while in the prison cells and was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for treatment where he was pronounced dead.
In June 2022, an inmate from Kyabasenge Prison in Kakumiro collapsed and died while attempting to escape from lawful custody.
