Police have warned motorists to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol following a targeted enforcement operation that saw 65 drivers arrested ahead of the Easter weekend.

The operation, conducted across the stations of Jinja Road, Katwe, and Wandegeya, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety during the busy festive period.

Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson noted that drink-driving remains one of the leading causes of road crashes, particularly during holidays when travel and social activities increase.

All 65 suspects are currently in custody, where they are undergoing procedures including recording of statements and fingerprinting. They are expected to be arraigned in court at an appropriate time to face charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police emphasized that alcohol significantly impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and increases the risk of fatal accidents. Kananura urged all road users to act responsibly and avoid behaviors that endanger their lives and those of other road users.

The crackdown serves as a strong reminder that law enforcement remains vigilant, and offenders will be held accountable as part of efforts to ensure safer roads throughout the Easter season.
