At least 11 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a tragic road accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway.

According to Micheal Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson, the crash happened at 1:30 a.m. at Kalegero Corner in Lwengo District. It involved a bus, registration number UAL 492H, belonging to Kasaba Bus Company, and a Tata lorry, registration number UBH 013Q.

“The injured victims were rushed to hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary pending post-mortem examinations,” Kananura said.

All injured passengers were taken to Lyantonde Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The deceased were also conveyed to the same facility.

Preliminary information suggests the crash occurred in the dead of night, a time often associated with reduced visibility and driver fatigue, though police have not yet confirmed the exact cause. Investigations are ongoing to establish what led to the collision.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a horrific aftermath, with the two vehicles badly damaged and rescue teams working for hours to retrieve victims trapped in the wreckage. Some survivors were said to have sustained serious injuries.

The Masaka–Mbarara Highway is one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors, linking the central region to the west. However, it has also been the scene of multiple fatal accidents, often attributed to speeding, reckless driving, and poor visibility at night.

Police have since urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when driving at night, and to observe traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.

This latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over road safety in Uganda, with authorities continuing to call for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater public awareness.
