Dr. Sarah Bireete, Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance, has been arrested and is currently in police custody, according to the Uganda Police Force.
The reasons behind her arrest and potential charges are still unknown, with authorities stating that investigations are ongoing.
As a prominent human rights activist and lawyer, Dr. Bireete has been a vocal advocate for constitutional governance and civic space in Uganda.
She has also served as Chairperson of the East and Horn of Africa Election Observers Network and is a regular contributor to national discussions on governance and human rights.
The police have confirmed that Dr. Bireete will be arraigned before a competent court once investigations are complete.
